📋 MobyMax Placement Tests

A Comprehensive Guide for Teachers

Teacher Resources • v1.1.1

What is a Placement Test?

A Placement Test in MobyMax is a diagnostic assessment that determines where a student should begin their learning journey in a specific subject. It evaluates the student's current knowledge and skill level, then places them at the appropriate grade level within the curriculum.

Unlike regular lessons or practice activities, Placement Tests are diagnostic tools. They identify what a student already knows and, more importantly, what gaps exist in their understanding.

This distinction is critical: Placement Tests don't teach — they measure. The results then guide MobyMax to assign the right content at the right level.

💡 Key Insight

A Placement Test sets the student's personal Learning Level — it determines where they should be working now based on their current abilities.

Why Placement Tests Matter

Placement Tests serve four essential purposes:

  • Accurate Starting Point: Students begin at their actual level, not where we assume they should be.
  • Gap Identification: Reveals specific standards the student has not yet mastered.
  • Prevents Frustration: Students aren't thrown into content that's too difficult.
  • Avoids Boredom: Students aren't stuck repeating content they've already mastered.

Without accurate placement, students either struggle with material that's too advanced or waste time on concepts they've already learned. Neither leads to effective learning.

When to Assign a Placement Test

At the Start of a Student's Journey

Placement Tests are normally done when a student first starts using MobyMax. This establishes their baseline and ensures they begin at the correct level in each subject.

Reasons for Reassigning a Placement Test Later

There are situations where assigning a new Placement Test makes sense after a student has already been using MobyMax:

1. Student Progress Has Stalled

If a student's progress in a grade has stopped going up — for example, they're stuck at 80% on a grade and not improving — this may indicate a gap in foundational knowledge.

You have two options:

  • Wait for Benchmarker Tests to identify the specific gaps later
  • Assign a full Placement Test now to identify and address the gaps immediately
Recommendation: If the gap appears large, don't wait for the Benchmarker Test. Unaddressed gaps can hinder learning at higher grades, making it harder for the student to progress.

2. Student Has Been Away from MobyMax for a Long Period

If a student has been away from MobyMax for an extended time (holidays, illness, or other circumstances), their skills may have changed. In these cases, a full reset and starting fresh is often a good idea.

Remember: The Placement Test sets their personal Learning Level based on where they are now.

Initial Placement Test Instructions

When a student first joins MobyMax, they need to complete placement tests to establish their baseline. Here's the process:

📚 Placement Test Order

Select the Books icon, then complete tests in this order:

  1. Maths
  2. Reading Level Assessment
  3. Language
  4. Vocabulary (Placement Test PLUS One Lesson)
Why "Plus One Lesson"? In the Vocabulary Placement Test, the student chooses which words they know. In the Plus One Lesson that follows, they practice those words. This combination gives MobyMax accurate data on both recognition and application.
  5. Foundation Reading

⚠️ Important Test Rules

  1. No calculators for maths — we need to see what they can do unaided
  2. No googling answers — this defeats the purpose of placement
  3. Have a notepad for workings — scratch paper is allowed and encouraged

Summary

Placement Tests are diagnostic tools that determine a student's starting point in each subject. They are essential for ensuring students work at the right level — not too easy, not too hard.

  • New students should complete Placement Tests when they first start using MobyMax.
  • Existing students may need a new Placement Test if their progress has stalled or they've been away for an extended period.

The goal is simple: get students to the right level so they can learn effectively and make real progress.
