What is the SAT? A Guide for SA Students

📚

Understanding the SAT

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a globally recognised standardised test that measures your readiness for university. It's NOT a matric equivalent - it's an admissions test used alongside your GED or American High School Diploma.

💻

New Digital Format (2024)

Since 2024, the SAT is fully digital and takes only 2 hours 14 minutes. You'll use the Bluebook app on test day, with an on-screen calculator available for all maths questions. The test adapts to your performance in real-time.

🎯

Why SA Students Need It

Essential for US university applications and increasingly accepted by SA universities for GED/AHSD holders. Stellenbosch University requires SAT scores for international curriculum students. It's your pathway to global education opportunities.

SAT Test Structure - Total Score: 1600

📖 Evidence-Based Reading & Writing

  • Score Range: 200-800 points
  • Duration: 64 minutes
  • Questions: 54 questions
  • Format: 2 adaptive modules (32 min each)
  • Tests: Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary

🔢 Mathematics

  • Score Range: 200-800 points
  • Duration: 70 minutes
  • Questions: 44 questions
  • Format: 2 adaptive modules (35 min each)
  • Tests: Algebra, problem-solving, data analysis

💡 Important for SA Students: The SAT uses American terminology and spelling. You'll see "math" instead of "maths", "color" instead of "colour", and measurements in imperial units. Practice with official materials to familiarise yourself with these differences.
