FAQ Section

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this be used to supplement regular school - just for catching up?
Yes! Many families use our programme as an affordable alternative to expensive tutors. Just 30-60 minutes daily during homework time can address specific learning gaps and help your child catch up. MobyMax adapts to your child's exact level, providing individualised attention to areas of weakness. Perfect for working parents who can't afford R300+/hour tutors.
What exactly is MobyMax and why do we need it first?
MobyMax is an adaptive US curriculum (Grade 1-8) that identifies and fills every learning gap. It's essential because South African students are typically 2-3 years behind international standards. Without fixing foundation gaps first, GED/AHSD becomes nearly impossible. MobyMax ensures every concept is mastered before advancing.
My child is 16 - do they really need to start at Grade 1?
The placement test determines their starting point - rarely Grade 1. However, even if they have early gaps, older students FLY through early content! A 16-year-old typically completes Grade 1-6 in just 4-8 weeks. Their maturity means concepts that took 6-year-olds months take them days. Most teens complete all gaps in 3-6 months.
How many hours per day are required?
Supplementary use: 30-60 minutes daily during homework time
Full homeschooling: 2-4 hours for younger children, 4-6 hours for older children.

Remember: 20 hours on MobyMax = one full grade level. Without classroom disruptions, homeschooling is 2-3x more efficient than traditional school.
Is homeschooling legal in South Africa?
Yes, completely legal. The South African Schools Act of 1996 allows parents to educate children at home. You must register with your provincial education department. We recommend joining the Pestalozzi Trust for protection and support with registration.
Can homeschooled children go to university?
Yes, but the path depends on the qualification chosen.

GED: Recognised as NQF Level 4 (same level as Matric) but considered matric WITHOUT exemption. Since 2020, USAf no longer grants university exemptions for GED. Most SA universities require GED holders to first complete a Higher Certificate (1 year bridging) before degree studies. Some private universities accept GED directly.

AHSD: Can provide direct university entry if students meet ONE of these requirements:
• Pass 2+ Advanced Placement (AP) exams at grade 3-5, OR
• Achieve SAT score of 1130+ (610 Reading/Writing, 530 Math)

Without meeting these requirements, AHSD holders need bridging programmes like GED holders.

Important: Some universities may require SAT scores regardless of qualification. Always check directly with your university of choice for their specific admission requirements, as these can vary by institution and faculty.
