MobyMax Placement Test Guide

Everything you need to know about getting started with MobyMax's Placement Tests

What is the MobyMax Placement Test?

Diagnostic Assessment Tool

The MobyMax Placement Test is an adaptive diagnostic assessment that automatically adjusts question difficulty based on your child's responses. It precisely identifies your child's current grade level in each subject area.

Time Required

Each subject test takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete, however this is just a guide. There is no time limit! Your child can take breaks between subjects, and the test saves progress automatically.

Personalised Learning Path

Based on the results, MobyMax creates a completely personalised curriculum that starts exactly where your child needs help, filling gaps from previous grades while advancing to new concepts.

📌 Important for South African Parents

The placement test reveals your child's actual grade level according to international standards - not just their current school grade. This often shows a 2-3 year gap between SA curriculum expectations and global standards.

Why is the Placement Test Critical?

1

Identifies Hidden Learning Gaps

Your child might be in Grade 7 but have gaps from Grade 4 mathematics. Without identifying these gaps, they'll continue to struggle with advanced concepts built on shaky foundations.

2

Prevents Wasted Time

Without proper assessment, your child might spend months on material they already know or, worse, attempt concepts they're not ready for. The placement test ensures every minute counts.

3

Creates Confidence

Starting at the right level means your child experiences success from day one. They're neither bored nor overwhelmed, building confidence as they progress.

4

Saves Money

By pinpointing exact needs, you avoid paying for tutoring that teaches at the wrong level. MobyMax targets precisely what your child needs to learn.

"

"I was shocked when the placement test showed my Grade 6 daughter was actually performing at Grade 3.5 level in maths. No wonder homework was such a battle! Now, 6 months later, she's caught up and actually enjoys maths."

- Sarah M., Cape Town Parent

⚠️ What Happens Without a Placement Test?

  • Your child works on the wrong grade level, making no real progress
  • Frustration builds as they can't understand new concepts
  • Gaps compound year after year, making catching up harder
  • You waste time and money on ineffective interventions
  • Luckly Mobymax always starts a new subject with a Placement Test!
⚠️

Important: When NOT to Take All Placement Tests

Your child should skip certain placement tests if:

1

They scored 0-10 points on the Language Placement Screener

Children placed at Grade K level are still developing foundational pre-reading skills. At this stage, only Mathematics has appropriate placement test content. Language, Reading, and Vocabulary placement tests aren't suitable until your child has basic letter recognition and phonics skills.

2

They're beginning their educational journey at Grade K

Very young learners (ages 3-5) who are just starting formal education should only take the Mathematics placement test. The other subject placement tests require reading ability that Grade K students haven't developed yet.

🎯 What to do instead:

  • Take ONLY the Mathematics placement test - this will properly assess their number sense and mathematical readiness
  • Follow the Grade K timetable for all other subjects - this provides age-appropriate foundational content
  • Wait for natural progression - as your child advances beyond Grade K level, MobyMax will automatically prompt them to take placement tests in Language, Reading, and Vocabulary when they're developmentally ready
  • Focus on foundations first - Grade K emphasizes letter recognition, phonics, and basic number concepts that prepare children for future placement tests

Don't worry about "missing" tests! MobyMax is designed to introduce placement tests at the right developmental stage. When your child progresses to Grade 1 level content, the system will automatically make the additional placement tests available. This ensures your child is never overwhelmed with assessments they're not ready for, while still getting properly placed in subjects they can handle.

Placement Test Subjects
Step 5

Start Placement Test

When you click on a subject for the first time, MobyMax will automatically start with the placement test.

Important: The test adapts to your child's answers. If they get questions right, it gets harder. If they struggle, it gets easier. This is normal and helps find their exact level.
Step 6

During the Test

Encourage your child to:
  • Read each question carefully
  • Try their best on every question
  • Not guess randomly - it's okay to get questions wrong
  • Take breaks between subjects if needed
  • Don't get stuck - If a question seems too hard and they've been thinking for several minutes, it's okay to guess and move on. Spending 10 minutes on one question won't help the test determine their level any better. The test expects some wrong answers - that's how it finds the right level
Parents should:
  • NEVER help with answers (this defeats the entire purpose) - The test needs to find your child's actual level, not yours. Helping them will place them at the wrong level, making lessons too difficult and causing frustration
  • Provide encouragement and emotional support
  • Remind them it's not a test they can fail
  • Let them work at their own pace
Step 7

Placement Tests Completed

The test automatically ends when MobyMax has enough data to determine your child's level. You'll see a completion message confirming the test is finished.

📝 Complete All Five Placement Tests

After finishing the Mathematics placement test, continue with the remaining four subjects to get a complete assessment of your child's abilities across all learning areas.

Special Note for Vocabulary: The Vocabulary placement test requires an additional step. After completing the placement test, your child must complete ONE regular vocabulary lesson immediately afterwards. This extra lesson helps MobyMax fine-tune the vocabulary level more accurately. Don't skip this step - it's essential for proper vocabulary placement!

What happens next:
  • MobyMax has already created your child's personalised curriculum based on their test results
  • Your child can immediately start learning at their exact level
  • Simply click on any subject icon to begin regular lessons
  • The system will automatically start with content that fills their specific gaps

Important: There's no waiting period - your child's personalised learning path is ready instantly. They can continue with normal lessons right away by selecting any subject icon from the main menu.

Understanding the Numbers

🔍 This example shows the following:

Grade K and Grade 1 - Perfect Start

If your child scores 100% beginning proficiency, they have no learning gaps — they already understand all the material for that grade.

Identifying Learning Gaps
Grade 2: 75% proficiency = missing 25% of Grade 2 content
Grade 3: 84% proficiency = missing 16% of content
Grade 4: 80% proficiency = missing 20% of content
Grade 5: 55% proficiency = missing 45% - a significant gap
Grade 6 and 7: 0% = MobyMax stopped testing here. When proficiency drops to around 50% or below, the system stops testing higher grades. Your child may have some knowledge at these levels, but MobyMax will first focus on filling the gaps in earlier grades.
🚀 Why This Matters

The placement test results give you a complete picture of your child's learning foundation:

📍

Shows where gaps began in earlier grades

📊

Identifies which concepts need attention before moving forward

🎯

Helps create a targeted learning path to fill specific gaps

Remember: These results show where your child is starting from. With MobyMax's personalised approach, they'll systematically fill these gaps and build a strong foundation for advanced learning.

Maths 4.9

What does 4.9 mean?

  • 4 = Grade 4 level
  • .9 = 11 months into Grade 4 (90% complete)
  • Scale: .0 (beginning) to .9 (end of grade)

So 4.9 means your child is currently at Grade 4, Month 11 level

Important: This number represents an average of the grade level taking into account ALL the gaps across different mathematical concepts.

Continue with Other Subject Placement Tests

Important: Continue onto the other subjects to get the Placement Test Results for a complete picture of your child's academic level.

📊 Similar Reports (Same format as Maths - showing detailed gaps in each grade):

  • Language - Shows grade level with decimal (e.g., 5.3)
  • Foundation Reading - Shows grade level with decimal (e.g., 4.7)

📈 Grade-Only Reports:

  • Vocabulary - Shows achieved grade level only (e.g., Grade 5)
  • Reading Level Assessment - Shows achieved grade level only (e.g., Grade 6)

Completing all placement tests gives you a comprehensive understanding of your child's strengths and areas needing support across all subjects.

The Reality Check: International vs CAPS Grade Levels

The 2-Year Reality

Our extensive research comparing South African CAPS results to international standards reveals a consistent pattern: South African children are typically at least 2 years behind their international peers, and in many cases, the gap is even larger.

Making Sense of Your Child's Results

International Grade 4.9 Your child's actual level
Add 2 years
CAPS Equivalent 6.9 How it translates in SA

What This Really Means

Most parents find these results quite shocking. In the example above, a child who achieved an international grade average of 4.9 would be performing at approximately a 6.9 level in CAPS terms. This means a Grade 7 student who appears to be doing reasonably well in the South African system is actually performing at a Grade 4-5 international level.

🎯 Critical Mindset Shift Required

This should be the LAST time you ever compare back to CAPS.

From this moment forward, focus exclusively on international standards. Your child's future opportunities - university admissions, career prospects, and global competitiveness - will be measured against international benchmarks, not CAPS.

Why International Standards Matter:
🎓

Universities worldwide assess applicants on international standards

💼

Global employers expect international-level skills and knowledge

🌐

Online learning and remote work require global competitiveness

🚀

Future opportunities depend on meeting world standards

The Path Forward

Now that you understand the real situation, you're empowered to take decisive action. MobyMax will systematically close this gap through personalised learning. Most students make 1.5+ years of progress annually, meaning your child can not only catch up to international standards but potentially exceed them with consistent effort.

Remember: Every day of focused learning with MobyMax is a step toward international competitiveness. The gap exists, but it's not permanent - it's simply your starting point for an exciting journey of accelerated learning.
