University Admission Requirements by Qualification

1. National Senior Certificate (NSC – Matric)

South African Universities:

  • Bachelor’s Pass (Minimum Requirements for Degree Programs):
    • Home Language: At least 40%.
    • Four Key Subjects (e.g., Mathematics, Life Sciences): At least 50%.
    • Two Other Subjects: At least 30%.
    • Life Orientation counts but is often not considered in admission scoring by universities.
  • Competitive Programs (e.g., Medicine, Engineering, Law):
    • Require 60-75% or higher in key subjects (e.g., Mathematics, Physical Sciences, or English).
    • Some universities calculate an Admission Points Score (APS) based on subject performance:
      • Bachelor’s Pass: APS of 21-30 (varies by institution and program).

International Universities:

  • Direct Admission: Not generally accepted without additional qualifications, such as:
    • Bridging Programs: A-Levels, Foundation Year.
    • Standardized Tests: SAT or ACT scores.
  • Competitive Programs: Universities may require 60-70% or higher in relevant subjects alongside a bridging qualification.

2. GED (General Educational Development)

South African Universities:

  • Recognized by SAQA as equivalent to the NSC at NQF Level 4.
  • Additional Requirements for Degree Programs:
    • Universities typically require SAT or ACT scores.
    • GED by itself is rarely sufficient for competitive degrees like Medicine or Engineering.

Scores:

  • Passing GED Score: 145+ per subject.
  • College-Ready Score: 165+ per subject.
  • Universities may expect:
    • SAT scores of 1100+ or ACT scores of 20+ for competitive programs.

International Universities:

  • Recognized as equivalent to a high school diploma, but additional qualifications (e.g., SAT, ACT, or college prep courses) are often required.
  • College Admission Requirements:
    • College-Ready GED Scores: 165-174 per subject for mid-level universities.
    • Competitive Programs: SAT scores of 1200+ or ACT scores of 25+.

3. American High School Diploma

South African Universities:

  • Requires SAQA evaluation to confirm equivalency to the NSC (NQF Level 4).
  • Honors/Advanced Diploma (26+ Credits):
    • Stronger recognition when paired with SAT/ACT scores.
  • Standard Diploma (21 Credits):
    • Requires SAT scores for competitive programs.
  • Scores for Admission:
    • GPA of 3.0-3.5 (75-85%).
    • SAT scores of 1100+ for mid-level programs; 1300+ for competitive programs.

International Universities:

  • Honors/Advanced Diploma: Highly competitive, especially when combined with Advanced Placement (AP) coursework or Dual Enrollment.
  • Standard Diploma: Requires additional tests (SAT/ACT) for admission.
  • Scores for Admission:
    • Top Universities: GPA of 3.5-4.0 (85-100%) and SAT scores of 1300-1500+.
    • Mid-Level Universities: GPA of 2.5-3.5 (70-85%) and SAT scores of 1000-1200+.
